The 5 Major Elements of Sunday Worship
1. Exaltation -
The Sunday service is known as a “Worship”. So exaltation should be the most important segment of the worship. Believers should first remind themselves how worthy God is of our adulation and how great His grace is towards us. Therefore we employ Bible passages and hymns to praise, honour and worship Him.
2. Truthfulness –
Christ said, “True worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23) Therefore, worshipping God must be in truthfulness. Truthfulness means to be “true”. We should be true in our prayers or hymn singing. Regrettably, at times during worship we are just mouthing words when praying or not in concordance with the lyrics when singing, such that our souls do not feel that they have come before the Lord. So truthfulness must encompass the whole person’s “full commitment”, recognizing that one has really approached the Holy Throne of God to worship the Almighty that was, and is, and is to come.
The other meaning of “true” is “The Truth”. That signifies worshipping the true God according to His word and His will. So if it is not the content and procedure prescribed by God, we must not arbitrarily assume that we can use any method that seems right to us and pleases us to worship the Lord just because we think we are faithful and reverential.
3. Quietude –
Habakkuk 2:20: “But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.” 1 Corinthians 14:33: “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.” Our God is the Lord most high, and the greatest God. We should have a deferential and tranquil soul when coming to worship Him. Isaiah 30:15: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” A quiet surrounding can bring one into a peaceful state of mind. Only a peaceful state of mind can allow one to easily hear God’s words and get closer to the Lord.
Believers should maintain silence within the temple of God. Don’t “talk loudly and snigger softly”. Don’t whisper mouth to ear. The fellowship of believers should best occur before entering into the assembly place or after dismissal.
4. Listening to the sermon –
The word of God cannot be lacking in any gathering to worship the Lord. So we should properly prepare our hearts and minds to meekly receive His word. Psalm 123:2 says, “As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he shows us his mercy.” Most importantly, do not stop at the listening stage, but carefully observe what God is saying to us. We must respond to His word, acknowledge its comfort, admonition, and instruction, and then resolutely put it into practice.
5. Have God’s presence -
The most important aspect of a worship service is to have God’s presence, for He is the focus of the assembly, the star of the assembly. Therefore the church must follow the will of the Lord in all things and permit Him to occupy first place at the church. Only then will the worship be meaningful. The church must also be holy for the Lord to be present. We must worship God through holy living. Only then will our worship be pleasing to Him. And we must worship God through lives of mutual love. Only then will others see that that is the manifestation of the character of God amongst us. Our assemblies must have God’s presence in order that we will truly be worshipping God, and indeed worshipping on “The Lord’s Day”.
