The Mind of Christ Jesus
In the membersˇ¦ life of fellowship within the church, Paul encourages believers to progress and be joyful in the true faith, and to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ with the same mind as that of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:5) Although our Lord had no beauty or majesty, yet He has a beautiful mind that believers should come to know and emulate.
1. A mind of humility ˇV
Although Christ is in very nature God, He was willing to lay aside all Heavenly glory, riches, authority and honour to become a humble man, taking the form of a servant to suffer humiliation, poverty, misunderstanding and oppression. The Creator of the Heaven and the earth in truth possesses everything and is above everything, yet emptied Himself for our sakes, lowering Himself to become a human being, and was even willing to wash the feet of His students. This is something truly unimaginable. Although He could perform miracles, and there was power in His words to attract thousands, yet He did not shout or cry out or raise His voice. (Isaiah 42:2) Our Lord Jesus Christ has a mind of humility.
2. A mind of submission to the will of the Heavenly Father ˇV
Christ submitted to the will of the Heavenly Father all His life. From youth, He had the Fatherˇ¦s affairs in His heart. (Luke 2:49) He looked upon obeying the will of God and doing His work as His own food. (John 4:34) He heeded the revelation of God in the Old Testament, ˇ§Here I am - it is written about me in the scroll - I have come to do your will, O God.ˇ¨ (Hebrews 10:7) The Holy Son worked on earth in accordance with the work of the Holy Father. ˇ§The Son can do nothing by Himself; He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.ˇ¨ (John 5:19) Christ completed the will of God within the time and plan of the Heavenly Father. Even at the moment of His greatest suffering on the Cross, He did not forget the words of the Father, but spoke to fulfill the prophesy of the Prophet. Our Lord Jesus Christ has a mind of submission to the will of the Heavenly Father.
3. A mind of service ˇV
Christ used admonition, healing, and the driving away of demons to serve people. ˇ§Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.ˇ¨ (Matthew 9:35) He had pity on those listening to His sermons, serving over 5,000 people with two loaves and five fishes. He washed the feet of His disciples, and used a fire of burning coals and bread to serve His dejected and depressed disciples. ˇ§Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:28) Our Lord Jesus Christ has a mind of service.
4. A mind of selflessness ˇV
The Son of God came to earth to become an atoning sacrifice for our sins. ˇ§This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.ˇ¨ (1 John 3:16) Because Christ loves us very much, He humbled Himself to become a man and gave up the honour and glory of the Son of God. As the Son of Man, He also gave up the basic rights of a person. ˇ§No one takes it (life) from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again." (John 10:18) Christ Jesus gave up His life for us, becoming a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Ephesians 5:2) This is unsurpassable love on earth. Our Lord Jesus Christ has a mind of selflessness.
We are the followers of Jesus Christ. Only with the mind of Christ can we have power and effect in our lives and testimonies. ˇ§Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.ˇ¨ (Philippians 2:5)
